How To Be Brilliant - At Doing What You Dread!

Extract from the FREE report:

Almost everyone has something that they wish they could do better. Or even something they believe they can't do at all. It may be lack of knowledge that's the problem, or lack of opportunity to practise a skill. Or there could be a real psychological barrier that makes the thing, literally, impossible.

You may experience a particular problem yourself or you may be trying to coach someone who just isn't responding the way you want.

For example, do you, or does one of your team:

  • Procrastinate over management actions because you're not comfortable with confrontation?
  • Do you panic at the thought of an interview or just dry up when put on the spot?
  • Are you nervous and awkward when presenting or making a speech?
  • Do you feel threatened by certain people so that you can't deal with them confidently?
  • Perhaps you feel defensive when your boss asks how things are going.
  • Are you uncomfortable with giving people room to develop - prefering to tell them what to do?
  • Is it an ordeal to meet new people and network with them?
  • Do you sometimes have difficulty getting your views across?

All of these situations are much more common than you might think. Even people in very senior positions can suffer from these blocks and phobias. You probably know more than one top-level manager whose people skills are poor and you wonder how they got to where they are.

In any organisation where technical or professional knowledge and skills are valued, it is likely that the managers have a strong background in the technical detail. They may even be the best in their department or company. But are they effective leaders? Do those under them in the hierarchy suffer?

Why does it matter?

There are financial and emotional costs associated with these patterns:

  • Teams perform badly
  • Objectives are not met
  • Deadlines are missed
  • Careers are blocked
  • People are dissatisfied or just unhappy
  • Valuable people leave
The root of the problem

So how is it that otherwise competent people can lack interpersonal, leadership or influencing skills?

The root cause is that they have never learnt how to do "it".

But how did that other person that you know who

  • really shines in interviews,
  • gets on with everyone,
  • twists the boss round their little finger,
  • always gets what they want from meetings,
  • presents with assurance and style,
learn to do these things?
